About St John Vianney Primary School

St John Vianney Primary School, Morisset is situated in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in the township of Morisset and offers students a happy and peaceful environment with a real community spirit.

Students are encouraged to pursue excellence in all fields of school life and to extend their learning experiences and enhance their skills. Initiatives such as Tournament of the Minds, Lexia, MultiLit and Mathletics are designed to cater for all students’ needs and allow for collaboration and personalised learning. We provide a gifted and talented program as well as having strong connections with our indigenous community. Teachers have been appointed to support these areas.

The school plays an important role in the wider community by supporting the Parish Sacramental Program and having a representative on the Parish Coordinating Team. The school regularly attends Masses and Liturgies and the Mini Vinnies group organises fun days to raise money for the local community, as well as those in the mission fields overseas.

St John Vianney offers a range of sports across the internal and external sporting program including netball, soccer, tennis, basketball, rugby league, touch football, rugby union and golf. Students are given the opportunity to compete and represent at local, regional, diocesan and state level in swimming and athletics carnivals, cross country and team sports and can participate in the Paul Harragon Cup, Waratah Shield, soccer and netball gala days, join the gymnastic program and improve their swimming skills by attending a 10-day intensive swimming program at Morisset pool. The active after school community program provides specialist coaching in the areas of bike riding and safety, soccer, cricket and much more.

Winning the 2012 Lake Macquarie Environmental award, the school has a strong environmental focus and involves students in recycling programs, vegetable gardens and protecting the waterways of Lake Macquarie. The school is also involved in water testing programs and regularly tests the local creek and has built a swale in the school playground to help control and monitor the water running through the playground.

Students have the opportunity to discover, strengthen and express their creative abilities through music, drama, dance and visual arts and are provided with the opportunity to participate in CAPA workshops, join the music program and school choir, audition for ASPIRE, take part in the dance program, Dance Fever and regularly enter local art competitions.

With the assistance of a specialist music teacher, the school has a musical every second year which is performed on school grounds and also hosts Carols by Candlelight, which is supported by the Parents and Friends Committee.

The school is well-equipped with modern facilities and innovative technology to maximise learning opportunities for students, giving them access to SMART Boards/Televisions and computers in classrooms, as well as a bank of computers in the new library, an excellent school hall, outdoor amphitheatre, environmental areas, play equipment and collaborative learning spaces.
